LittleBigPlanet 2 Review
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, said a plumber or something. Shut up, plumber. This is serious business. LittleBigPlanet had its fair share of bugs, sure, but it was never broke. Quite prosperous, actually. Years of additional content to the original LittleBigPlanet game sparked intentions for a sequel, and the year has come. This is the year. LittleBigPlanet 2.
Of course, this is no LittleBigPlanet v2.0. This is a whole new game with a whole new set of rules, mainly regarding the inclusion of logic, music producing and even more customisation. What you knew about LittleBigPlanet was a lie; LittleBigPlanet 2 is the real deal. With more costumes, stickers and materials to wear into your workshop of wondrous wonders, it’s fair to say that LittleBigPlanet 2 has drawn a line over a certain period in the franchise and worked above and beyond all expectations. For instance, a whole load has been unravelled in the share system, instead of a five-star system you’re now able to yay a level, and you can now review levels and people can judge your review as a rating of agrees-to-disagrees.
Once again, a delicate story awaits you in a similar manner as the first LittleBigPlanet game, with the same clichés such as the big bad meanie slurping everything out of existence and a whole load of curators helping Sackboy on his way. The story is more theatrical and grandiose this time around, with the inclusion of the lovely new cutscene level type. With this, you can put your director’s cap on and putter in the film trade, whether you create a segue between two of your levels or if you’re making a full film for people to watch while they sit around aimlessly tossing popcorn at their faces. Without mentioning too much, this is luxury.
Another level type you’ll find yourself playing around with is ‘versus’ levels. They allow for keen competition between a few local or online sacks, usually made for ranking the people in your party. This mode also allows for separate cameras so all the players in your party don’t have to share the same averaging camera; they have their own local cameras and have since been used for gallery or hangout levels. Usually they’re used for actual minigame levels for you to play with your friends and the community has proven that many feats can be achieved with a limit on gameplay and time, notably utilising the new logic pieces to make frivolously flamboyant doohickeys and whatsits.
The new logic pieces of which I speak are now playing a huge part in this dramatic performance of skill. They let you create intricately-designed gadgets from small top-down cars and jukeboxes to first person shooters and flight simulators – a clear step-up from LittleBigPlanet while maintaining that charm that seems to carry on from every LittleBigPlanet game. Moreover, the logic helps to reach out to the more intellectual Sackfolk among us, and thusly the game feels more complete, despite the first game feeling perfect… LittleBigPlanet 2 shows us that you can improve what seems to be quite simply flawless already. Similarly, the new music sequencer is pretty nifty, from the release of LittleBigPlanet 2 it has shown to be a rather delicate piece of equipment for adding that extra dose of atmosphere to your creations in the form of funky beats and classical tinges.
Conventionally, the story mode has much more of a fairy-tale aspect to it where the original game lacked. It involves more makeshift, animate characters that seem more interactive and amiable (naturally, since LBP1’s characters were basically made from cardboard). Each world is chiselled to a fine pseudo-era such as the strange confectionary world of a maniacal Scotswoman and the luscious fields of frantic flowery of a foreign fancy fruit. The story follows the “alliance”, a union of overseers who’re attempting to save the universe once again from a Negativitron, a massive vacuum cleaner sucking up creators’ creations.
Once again, Media Molecule has created a gem that will resonate with life for years to come. The masses of additions in the game have made it a necessity for any artist, player, musician or logical intellect and as a fair step up from its origin, LittleBigPlanet 2 is sure to entertain even the most cynical of gamers. Would you be that sceptical to miss out on something like this? I think I speak for millions of Sackfolk when I say it’s a completely worthwhile experience.
